The Quad Cities Hash House Harriers Red Dress Run will host their annual Red Dress
Run on Saturday, February 18, 2017. The event is open to all who are 21 or over and who are willing to run in a red dress to benefit charity. This year’s Red Dress Run will benefit Girls on the Run of the QC. Festivities for the event begin at 1:00 p.m. at Rascals Live, 1418 15th St., Moline, IL 61265 (USA).
The Quad Cities Hash House Harriers (Dirty Pirate Chapter) are part of the international Hash House Harriers, the largest running club in the world. One of several things that makes a Hash House Harriers run different is that only the “hares” (who mark the trail with baking flour or chalk) really know where it goes. Unlike a race, it’s strictly noncompetitive and beer awaits the runners at the end (and sometimes in the middle of the run).
Part of the Red Dress Run’s appeal is watching the astonished expressions from startled people encountered along the way. The run started as a joke in San Diego in 1988 to lampoon a visiting woman whose first exposure to hashing involved running in a red dress after the airline lost her luggage. The event soon spread to all corners of the world. The Red Dress Run has become the signature event for the Hash House Harriers, who enjoy legal protections for the phrase “Red Dress Run.” See the entertaining story of how the Red Dress Run began here.
While this will be the first exposure to the Hash House Harriers and their Red Dress Run for many, the Quad City event is expected to attract many “hashers” from across the country and perhaps from outside the United States. Nearly 100 Hash House Harriers Red Dress Runs are held across the globe each year.
